Elements of Problem Solving:
1. Identify the problem
2. Attempt to analyze or understand the problem
3. Use the analysis to set goals
4. Evaluate the appropriateness of the analysis
5. Take action to solve the problem
6. Evaluate, through feedback loops, whether the action accomplished the intended goals
* feedback loops * – review and evaluate each stage of the problem solving process (each
step). Possibly implementing changes in problem definition, assessment, goal setting, and/or
intervention to ensure that the problem solving “system” is in line with set goals
Process of problem solving in social work…
1. Define the problem(s)
2. Conduct an assessment
3. Set goals and objectives
4. Establish a contract
5. Intervene
6. Evaluate the process
7. End the process
Defining the Problem…
How would you define the problem here?
- Ask the mom what she thinks the problem is, how she defines the problem
You need to define the problem in a way that you, as the social worker, and your client
(the mom, in this case) can both agree and understand?
You must begin “where the client is”. This means understanding the problem through the
client’s story – it is only through their stories that you can begin to formulate your own
opinion on the nature of the problem.
This is the KEY to developing a solid client-worker relationship – starting where the
client IS.
- Voluntary client – if they define the problem, you move away from social control
Assessing the Problem…
Assessing the problem means setting goals and coming up with a plan to meet these
goals. Assessing the problem usually involves two main steps:
1. Understanding the nature of the problem.
- What is your understanding here, in the case of the video we just watched?
oForced to be a mother when she didn’t want to become one
oResents the daughter because she is forced to take care of her when she doesn’t
want to
oDoesn’t have appropriate coping mechanisms
