Began in the 15th century when europe took control of over 80% of the globe. Othering (classification of certain groups as inferior, who therefore needed to be. Helped, saved, and ruled by authorities/ colonists) was used as a major justification for colonial expansion. Othering was justifiable because others were deemed to lack qualities needed to survive, which they could not gain without help. Colonialism is a site of false categories which create colonizers and colonized along the lines of race. Race is a made up distinction to make people inferior when it does not matter. Orientalism: the study of the east, by the west. Promote industry, thrift, and virtue amongst the poor. Primarily elite women classified people as deserving or undeserving poor based on religious principals. Poor laws 1601 and reform in 1832. Workhouses: for able-bodied who worked for relief (undeserving) Temporarily out of luck through no fault of their own.
