Document Summary

There was a succession issues because lenin was very ill. There was also an issue because of impending split between parts of the bolshevik party. This was an issue in that he doesn"t think stalin or trotsky are equipped to lead the party, nor is anybody within the party able to lead it. The party is entirely the creation of lenin; the soviet union is his creation. Soviets hadn"t set up an mechanism for succession. There was an expectation in which if there was a split between the two. He is dealing with the issue of instability by putting it in a class framework. Things should be focused on the collective; class relationships and class struggle was based on alliance between the two classes. He is uncomfortable with the idea of individuals being in control. Trotsky is competent, but too into the administrative work to be leader. Lenin believed in having a face in inspiring people.
