Topic 6: both have culture of equal weight. The power of culture: culture is defined by. Enculturation: process through which individuals learn the ideas and behaviors that constitute their culture. Since culture is learned, it follows that it must also be shared by groups. We organize shared aspects of culture using schemas: Allows us to classify and use our knowledge to categorize it. Symbol: something that stands for something else with no necessary link between the two. It iis because culture is integrated that a holistic perspective is necessary for studying culture. It is always changing due to both internal and external influences. Always changing: studying culture is like studying a river. It is always changing from outside sources or natural events. Ethnocentrism- the tendency to view other cultures based on ones own cultural assumptions. Should be considered in the context of the local view.
