Lecture 21, 22, 23 // march 7-11 2016. Incest taboo: cultural norm prohibiing sexual relaionships between close relaives. Incest taboo requires one to look outside of their kin group for marriage partners. Incest and resuling inbreeding are undesirable both socially & geneically. Yet, who one considers to be a close relaive varies cross-culturally. Exogamy: out-marriage" is the custom or cultural preference for seeking marriage partners outside of one"s on social group. Endogamy: in-marriage" requires an individual to marry within their own social group. Kinship: culturally recognized social relaionships founded on marriage, birth, and nurturance o o. Descent: deines culturally recognized categories to which one belongs based on parent-child connecions o o o. Allows for the incorporaion of new members to the social group. Traces kinship through one parent"s lineage: members of a lineage trace mutual descent to a common ancestor o o. The terms we use to label relaives are culturally speciic.
