The locals say that pidgin is the language of hawaii": everyone uses it, the hawaiian language belongs to the naive people; it is diferent. Pidgin started when diferent immigrants started to speak to one another in broken english: they tried to use english but threw in words from their own languages to compensate the breaks. Everything that we do on the island is captured in the language it is the thing that stamps us as hawaiians, so its important to us : it is a very important sense of idenify for the hawaiians. The locals say that pidgin is simple, it is short and sweet. There is a sigma that people believe that people who speak pidgin are uneducated/illiterate: pidgin used to be referred to as bad english . Some people can deiniively switch between pidgin and english, others cannot.
