ANTHR207 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Cultural Relativism, Ethnocentrism, Reductionism
Document Summary
3 fieldwork: a meeting of cultural definitions (part 1) May be in a faraway remote area (small group of people) or a local area / big city area. The opinion that one"s own way of life is natural or correct, indeed the only way of being human. Tendency to view traits, behaviours, and values you observe in others as inferior. Assumption that their ways are less natural than yours. Tend to think there is only one way to be human and that is our way. Behave differently to you, different clothes, and different food. Find a mediator (something in common between the two) Research (prepare yourself for what you would expect) Brief language (things that you need to know how to say) Immerse in their cultures (live there, to get to know them) Danger when in another culture, you interpret your way as the right way and their way is the wrong way.
