Family and how we become family in our communities. Relationships / connections based on blood and genetics. Important in some societies, where descent is important for social/political categories. Nuclear family = man + woman + children. Blended family no blood relationship but have a family. Wide variation across cultures but anthropologists agree that marriage is: the continuing and socially approved union of two or more people that may: be an institution that prototypically involves a man and a woman. Not the same everywhere: transforms the status of the participants. Change your last name (affects mostly females: carries implications about sexual access. Marriage may be a way to control sexuality, control legitimate offspring: gives offspring a position in society. Legitimate children will have recognized position in that society, opposed to illegitimate children who may not receive the same recognition: establish connections between the kin of a husband and the kin of a wife.
