Episode 5: realms of light: the art of the baroque. Series of meetings (3 sessions in 18 year period) during which they had debated the ethic of church policy, and what the church needs to do to control the damage done by the policy. Visual material can be a potentially powerful tool, if it is used wisely: in this context, art became too detached, too intellectualizing, and over the head of the average person, confused the uneducated, and distracted the educated. What it didn"t do was connect with the viewer. Engages the worshipper (1) visual, (2) emotionally, (3) spiritually. Creates strong emotional response, inflames the religious imagination. Evokes piety: overall quality should be: theatrical, dramatic, performative, interactive, sensational (involving all senses), participatory. Goes past the visual: it isn"t just about viewing, includes all the senses (including spiritual) Its effectiveness is predicated on the acknowledged presence of the viewer.
