Document Summary
Biol 107 - lecture 9 - prokaryotic cells. Bacteria do not have the same type of cytoskeleton as eukaryotes, therefore their motile structures and strategies are completely different. Rotates like a corkscrew for cellular movement. The hook bends the flagellum at an angle. Located at the circular arrow in the diagram. The rotation can be clockwise (forwards) or counterclockwise (backwards) Some can only go one direction, some both. Contains the gear system that drives rotation. The bulbous portion of the flagellum located inside the cell. When the protons flow through a transporter back into the cell they act as a turnstile. Protons flow in, pushing on and turning the gears, causing the flagellum. Purpose of a bacterial cell wall is to prevent osmotic lysis in hypotonic environments. Built on the outside of the cell. Attaches the peptidoglycan to the cell membrane as well as holds the layers of peptidoglycan together. Thin layer of peptidoglycan and an outer membrane.
