First fossil evidence of life on earth= 3. 5 bya. Stromatolites: rock-like structures composed of layers of bacterial mats and sediments. Prokaryotes are small and unicellular, ancestral but not primitive. They are still dominate in the biosphere and outweigh all eukaryotic cells by x10. They have a di use, circular ring of dna not enclosed by a membrane. They have plasmids which are small rings of dna containing a few extra genes. The cell wall provides the cell with protection and maintains the shape. It prevents the cell from exploding when placed in hypotonic solution (lower salutes than cell contents). Di using molecules must travel to interior of cells. Interior parts of a small cell are closer to the outside environment than those of a larger cell. Most bacteria reproduce asexually, through the process of binary visions, which produces two daughter cells which is a perfect clone of the parent cell.
