Document Summary

Topic 7- the fungi: 100000 described species- probably more like 1. 5 million!, molecular data puts them closer to animals than plants. Diverged 1. 5 million years ago: multicellularity evolved independently in fungi and animals, a very diverse group. 4 and 5 some are ectomycorrizal (5000 species including truffles), very specific to which species of plant they choose. Truffles can be found by pigs as they smeel like pig sex hormone. General characteristics of fungi: most multicellular and aerobic. Saprophytic: absorb form non-living, huge ecological role on global scale. Ant feeds on fungi spore, spore di(cid:448)ides (cid:373)itoti(cid:272)ally i(cid:374) the gut, (cid:373)esses up a(cid:374)ts" (cid:374)eurologi(cid:272)al syste(cid:373)s, a(cid:374)t (cid:272)li(cid:373)(cid:271)s high, dies, fungi spreads spores from high above a tree: many are mutualistic symbionts: eg lichens, mycorrhizal fungi. Fungal hyphae germinate and invade skin, glands, tissue, ears and wings and absorbs nutrients from the bat in winter when it hibernates. Hyphae is just a one cell thing string.
