Lecture 12 Continued: Land Plants
Bryophytes:
Not a monophyletic group
Lack true vascular tissues – limits their size
Most tissues are only one or two cells thick
Very thin, ground hugging plants
Haploid (1n) gametophytes are the most conspicuous, dominant phase of the life cycle
oDiploid only present for a part of the time
Often entire plants are either male or female
oMust live in moist places
oSperm swim through water film to fertilize eggs
oNOT fully terrestrial yet
