Document Summary

Example: calculate the mitotic index to determine the duration of mitosis. = (2 cells in mitosis)/(51 cells) x 100% Duration of mitosis (duration of 1 cell cycle) x (mitotic index) The index can also be applied to other phases. S phase: middle of interphase, doesn"t like different from g1 or g2. Label dna: 3h-thymidine: radioactive label, only gets incorporated into cells that are in s phase. Brdu: nucleotide, looks like uracil but in the end it"s going to have the structure of thymidine- it will label any cell going through dna replication (s phase) can label with fluorescently tagged antibodies. Label cells with fluorescent tag (something that labels total dna content- The flow cytometer counts each cell and tells how much fluorescence there is in each cell it analysis. It is a very powerful tool- quick and efficient. X axis: relative amount of dna per cell: amount of fluorescence. Y axis: number of cells that have that fluorescence intensity.
