Document Summary

The practical de nition: genetics uses manipulation of genes/genomes to study how genes function in fundamental biological processes . Example of biological processes that are being studied by genetics: immune system, wound healing, embryogenesis and organogenesis, eye development and vision. Gene: a physical and functional unit of heredity. Physical unit: segment of dna that contains information encoding a product (usually protein or rna) Functional unit: carries information from one generation to the next. A gene is heritable unit that correspond to a de ned, continuous stretch of dna (locus) on a larger nucleic acid molecules (rna or dna) and encodes a diffusible gene product that is either rna or protein (or both). Note: there are some genes with non-continuous loci, meaning that a part of the gene is on a different chromosome. : true gene products have a cellular destination (diffuse away from the gene locus) such as mrna that are translated.
