BIOL208 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Sexual Conflict, Promiscuity, Germination
Document Summary
50% of genes from mom, 50% genes from dad. 100% x 50% = 50% relatedness to sisters on dad"s side. 50% x 50% = 25% relatedness to sister"s on mom"s side. Sister therefore 75% related to each other. Only 50% related to offspring (male or female) Males: less energetically costly making copious amounts of sperm. Hermaphrodites: over 75% of plants are hermaphrodites, some fish. Instantaneous hermaphrodites: male and female at the same time. Sequential hermaphrodites: male first and then female, or female first and then male. Easier for plants to have a pollen source near by due to mobility. Mating systems define social sexual structures within a population. Genetic monogamist: the mom and the dad really are the parents. Social monogamy: the mom and the dad take care of the kid together, but the kids might not be their genetic offspring. Selection for traits that are not about survival. Secondary sexual traits: traits associated with attracting a mate.
