BIOL208 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Hadley Cell, Permafrost, Atmospheric Circulation
Document Summary
Environmental factors: temperature and precipitation, biomes, latitude and area. Ecozones of alberta (fig 2. 40)- alberta has mixed grassland. Temperature and climate: shape of the earth and way it rotates around the sun, uneven heating of the earth"s surface. Seasons (fig 2. 2: tilt is 23. 5 degrees from pane of the orbit, summer solstice. Winter solstice, equinox: precipitation varies at the equator clouds. Increases in density as it cools when it moves away from the equator, draws: this is the thermal loop. Climate diagram (fig 2. 5: temperature and precipitation of an area, red line is the mean annual temperature, when precipitation line is above the temp line, the blue area means there is enough rain for the environment. If temperature line is above the precipitation line, water is limited; there is not enough precipitation: for months highlighted red, the mean temperature is greater than zero. Microbes are processing organic material and are releasing more co2 which is reinforcing the greenhouse effect.
