Document Summary

Chem 101 - lecture 15 - valence bond theory and orbital hybridization. 11. 1, 11. 2, 11. 3 up to and including p. 446. Ignore p. 447 -8 (7th edition), 412 - 3 (6th edition), 428 - 30 (5th edition) Friday, oct. 16, 8 am - friday oct. 23 8am. There is no experimental evidence to support this theory. We use it because it is simple and gives qualitative results in organic chemistry. A covalent bond is formed when atomic orbitals of different atoms overlap. Each atom contributes a single valence electron with opposite spin. H_ (1s) + f _ (1s) _ (2s) _ _ _ (2p) Bond occurs in the 1s orbital of hydrogen and 2p orbital of fluorine because they have opposite spins. C 1s2 2s2 2p2 (2 arrows in parallel spin) (thus the expectation is that c will only have 2 bonds because there are only 2 electrons with parallel spins in 2p orbital)
