Learn the relevant details about the viruses that i use as examples (poliovirus, rhinovirus, influenza, hiv, measles, herpes virus). (if it is enveloped, then it has a different mechanism of entering and exiting the host cell). If it is transcribed in the cytoplasm, then it cannot splice pre-mrna. Know the mode of transmission of different viruses. Know the details of the viral diseases that we discuss in class. Understand the nature of the immune response to viruses with different lifestyles. How viruses cause cancer-an example from rous sarcoma virus. Viruses that cause damage by immunopathology: hepatitis b, influenza. Types of receptors used for attachment by viruses. Details of how a virus attaches and enters the cell. I use poliovirus and rhinovirus as examples to illustrate the need for a receptor to attach to the cell. Learn the way a membrane-enveloped virus enters the cell. I use influenza as an example of an enveloped virus.
