Class 254 september 13, 2016 : lec 4 chronology. Paleolithic greece: inhabited from 4500 bc onward. 7000 3000 bce: homo sapiens were rooted in cave-sites and other sedentary spaces, neanderthal evidence. Franchthi cave: located on the peloponnese, not far from the coast, part of the roof has collapsed over the years. Stratigraphy revealed that encompassed many thousands of years. Revealed shards and a development of humans and their subsistence enconomy very clearly. Potentially seasonal inhabitancy: use from paleolithic until the end of the neolithic period. Deer hunting, gathering wild lentils, pistachios and almonds, and later on fishing. From 8000 bce onward, the cave was used as a burial place. Fishing: tuna (larger equipment, boats: tuna fishing not done near the coast. Tuna needs a larger ship, and at deeper depths. Suggests a more sophisticated fleet used to fish. Larger quantity of obsidian tools and wider variety of shapes.
