DRAMA103 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Miasma Theory, Antifeminism, Henrik Ibsen
Document Summary
English script, themes of individualism, determinism, marriage, gender relations, class structure, etc. Nora - protagonist. seems happy and naive at rst, ignorant or complacent with her doll life of ignorant bliss and being condescended. We later come to learn that she is more intelligent and brave than she seems as she broke the law to take out a loan to save torvlad. She spent years of secret labor to pay off the debt showing her determination. When krogstad blackmails her it make her realize how she"s been downplaying her own potential to appease torvlad and everyone around her. Finally, when torvlad angrily reacts to the news of her deception, nora gains full awareness of the side of herself she"s been hiding (ex. eating macaroons and then lying, or swearing). Torvlad is a sexist and condescending man who underestimates. Although he treats nora like a child, he is the immature one. Krogstad - antagonist but not entirely a bad guy.
