Width not usually more than 50cm in height. 9-12 metres long: scrolls were read at about 30cm at a time, read from right to left (the right hand rolls, the left hand unrolls a new section. ) Genji monogatari emaki (picture scroll of the tale of genji, first half of the 12th century. ) What(cid:859)s left: (cid:1005)9 illustatio(cid:374)s, (cid:1006)(cid:1004) passages of te(cid:454)t ge(cid:374)ji (cid:449)as (cid:1009)(cid:1008) (cid:272)hapters lo(cid:374)g.
