Persian music review: pardes: the scale of persian music. This is the total collection of notes in the octave of. Note that persian music"s octave has 17 notes (unlike the west which has 12): mayes: the mode of persian music. Specifically it is a collection of seven separate dastagh pieces that make up the tradition: maqam: the mayes in persian music have some relationship with the original term maqam in arab music traditions. In very ancient times, early persian scales could have influenced arab scales before the appearance of the term maqam. These themes as well as music are what enables man to get outside of himself: persian music has been condemned for its emphasis on wine and lust. In a symbolic sense, sex could be construed to mean divine love and wine could be the ecstasy in sufi circles.
