HECOL170 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Static Cling, Chain-Growth Polymerization, Melt Spinning
Document Summary
Poor comfort characteristics properties common to synthetic bres: heat sensitive - fabrics shrink and melt when exposed to excess heat. Holes mat appear, pleats, creases, and 3d shapes can be heat-set. Yarns can be textured for bulk, fur like fabric possible. Can hurt the dyeing and nishing process, need to be careful and mindful. Glazing - the melting and attening of yarns and bres exposed to excess heat: resistance to most chemicals - technical applications where chemical resistance required. Do not absorb water or other liquids, resist soiling by most soils, hard to dye, resist solvents. Can create problems with comfort and static: resistant to insects, fungi, and rot - storage is no problem. Used in geotextiles, sandbags, shing lines, tenting, etc: low moisture absorbency - products dry quickly, resistant to waterborne stains. Does not shrink when wet: oleophilic - oil and grease stains must be removed by dry cleaning agents, electrostatic - static cling and shocks may occur.
