HECOL370 Lecture Notes - Lecture 23: Steam Cleaning, Dry Cleaning
Document Summary
Collective term for the care procedures used to maintain textiles. Purpose is to clean, brighten, or freshen up. B/c consumer textiles are repeatedly cleaned over their service life. Ability of textile products to withstand regular refurbishment, without adverse change is critical to consumer satisfaction. Cleaning with organic solvents changed with detergent and water. Many test methods have been developed to measure the e ects of laundering, dry- cleaning and restoration (ironing, steam pressing) on fabric properties. Tests are often standardized (controlled) cleaning processes for either laundering or dry-cleaning. This test is most often used to evaluate dimensional stability and appearance retention. Agitation and load size detergent and bleach added. Rince - # of cycles and temperature of water drying procedure and temperature. Often evaluations carried out after 1 and 5 cycles of the standard cleaning process. If failure is noted after 1 wash, testing is terminated. If textile passes after 5 washes, this is considered adequate performance.
