Document Summary
Human geography study of agriculture, settlement and industry. Has broadened over the past century from the strictly economic, to the economic and political, to the economic, political and cultural. This reflects a shift from empiricist, to marxist, to feminist and postmodern methodologies. Laws of supply and demand assume a perfect economic world, occupied by farmers motivated solely by profit. Different activities compete for use of any location. It is not possible for all activities to be carried out at their economically optimal locations, different activities may have different optimal locations. Typically land is assigned to the use that generates the greatest profits. The greater the profits a use generates, the more that use can afford to pay for that land. Maximum amount that a given use can pay. Focussing on what ought to be reather than what actually is. In normative theory, the aim is to seek what is rational or optimal according to some given criteria.
