Barbarian groups from east push west into the roman empire. Nothing was written down, believed nothing happened, but archeologist found other evidence: decorative metal work (bronze , silver, iron, gold, used semi-precious stones to decorate things), Ardagh-ireland gold work with jewels all over, found helmets with intricate decorations. Irish monks made the illuminated manuscripts, which were handed out as presents. Story of gospels in pictures, people were illiterate. Writing doesn"t disappear, scriptoria, monks copy religious manuscripts, ireland leads in the literature knowledge. Alcuin of york came to be director of the library at york, recuited by charlemagne to train men at his palace school, went and reordered classical education, the carolingian resiannace. Kings and leaders hand out their lands to the monks to build more catherdrals and monasteries. Used relics , people would go visit and pray to these saints and relics. Elite wanted their actions and life to be written about. Britain irish, scots, picts, angles, saxons, jutes.
