All clothing provides some sort of protection (functional) Historically clothing has been used to provide protection against a range of hazards. In hockey: leather gloves protect hands from cold; leather straps with wood to protect shins; goalkeeper using cricket wicket pads. 1936 olympics: leather helmets with wire caging was first seen. Unforseen, chance, acts of god" denote connotations of being unpredictable & unpreventable. Injury: tissue damage resulting from acute exposure to physical and/or chemical agents not unavoidable events caused by bad luck. Injuries are often slightly more predictable and do not happen at random. Prevent harmful agents that cause injury below the threshold that sustains this injury. Result from a combination of factors all which can be prevented. Most injuries are associated with the use of alcohol. Can occur by variety of mechanisms (e. g. , road traffic, water hazards, fire & hot liquids, obstacles leading to falls, poison) Intentional injuries involve violence, (e. g. , assault, homicide, suicide)
