Henderson, 2017: this theory also looks at intergenerational patterns because they are seen as a window to uncovering functional and dysfunctional relationships and behaviours. Key concepts: what is family, the family unit is a system that is active in maintaining their own boundaries and patterns e. g. communication patterns, members are interdependent, family system unit of interdependent individuals (allen & Henderson, 2017, p. 104: mutual influence subsystems within the family influence each other, family roles are invisible rules that everyone seems to understand, but are often subconscious in nature (allen & Henderson, 2017, p. 107: hierarchy don"t have to be a problem, can help a family maintain stability/homeostasis, hierarchies are dynamic, family system hierarchy, hierarchies within each subsystem too. 4: spillover of issues in one subsystem can affect another subsystem e. g. if one has realistic expectations of parenthood, they are better able to adjust.
