MATH113 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Antimicrobial Resistance, Biological Warfare, Dna Replication
Document Summary
Lab 3: cell phone biology and antibiotic resistance. The types of bacteria growing on and in our bodies are collectively referred to as the flora or microbiota, can differ depending on the location. The bacteria on us can be symbiotic (both sides benefit) or commensal (where there is no benefit or harm to either organism, or pathogenic (one side benefits and the other is harmed) Substances that prevent or inhibit bacterial or fungal growth. Can be a broad spectrum and act against a variety of bacteria. Some block cell wall formation, others damage its integrity, and some stop dna replication and growth. Genes found for the antibiotic resistance are often found on plasmids. A small dose of antibiotics can eliminate the bacteria that are sensitive to the antibiotic and leave only those that are tolerant or resistant to it.
