In the 1960s graffiti became individualized: greeks were the first to use graffiti, graffiti began in early colonial america after ww2 the first real youth culture, rise in ethnic pride, tagging became popular in new york, spray paint introduced in 1973, new styles such as brooklyn, bronx, wild style, different techniques like shading highlighting 3d, use walls instead of buses/trains, three types : gang graffiti, tags, throw ups (more colours and block letters) and pieces/murals (colourfully explosive) and abstract pictures/social advocacy slogans/signature, proponents graffiti is for expression and is a voice, opponents graffiti is urban decay. Methods used to combat graffiti: criminal prosecution and penalties, civil causes of action against writers (property owners can sue the people who are doing it, measures against the writers parents, prophylactic measures (curfews for any one under 18, uses resistant to spray paint materials)
