Document Summary

Clinical neuroscience: the scientific study of disorders and disease of the nervous system. Clinical neuroscience is the combination of three overlapping disciplines: neurology, psychiatry, and neuroscience. Neurology is the medical specialty encompassing diseases, conditions, and infections of the nervous system, which includes the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves. It is usually associated with physical changes in the nervous system. Psychiatry is the medical specialty encompassing the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental illnesses and includes addiction and substance use disorders. Physical changes in the nervous system are usually not obvious. Neuroscience is the scientific study of the brain and nervous system, including molecular neuroscience, cellular neuroscience, cognitive neuroscience, psychophysics, and computational modeling. The beginning of scientific studies on the brain started in the 17th century. In the 19th-20th century, neurology and psychiatry emerged and were studied separately until the 21st century when the two were combined into clinical neuroscience. The society for neuroscience was formed in 1969.
