Newborn monitoring: first 6-8 hours after birth, assess based on gestational age. Neuromuscular: posture, square window, arm recoil, popliteal angle, scarf sign, and heel to ear. Physical: skin, lanugo, plantar surface, breasts, eyes, ears and genitals less than 26 weeks: done in the first 12 hours. More than 26 weeks: done in the first 96 hours. Fused eyelids and earlobes: unfused by 26 weeks of gestations. Posture preterm: lack muscle to flex, delayed arm recoil. Square window posture: flex wrist until hand is lying almost laying directly towards the forearm. Foot to ear: resistance when term of post term.
