Document Summary
Best sites are outer posterior aspect of upper arms, abdomen from below costal margins to iliac crests, anterior aspects of thighs. Site frequently recommended for heparin injections is abdomen (others are scapular areas of upper back, upper ventral/dorsal gluteal areas) Injection site is right or left side of the abdomen at least 5cm (2 inches) from umbilicus. Is prefilled syringe with the attached needle: a skin fold held between thumb and forefinger, do not rub injection site after injection** (causes bruising) When giving u-100 insulin, use u-100 insulin syringes preattached 26 to 31-gauge needles. When giving u-500 insulin, use 1ml tuberculin syringes. Insulin injection sites: upper arm, anterior and lateral portions of the thigh, buttocks, abdomen. Intrasite rotation (like at least 2. 5cm away from previous site, no injection site should be used again for at least a month), to provide greater consistency in the absorption of insulin. Abdomen has quickest absorption, followed by arms, thighs, buttocks**
