The binomial name of a species consists of 2 parts: the genus name, (generic name) and the specific epithet. example: tyrannosaurus rex, homo sapien. genus is first name and specific epithets are the second part. Genus name always capitalized, and specific epithet is not. always italicized. Tyrannosaurus rex shares its specific epithet with othnielia rex (ornithopod dinosaur), Nuralagus rex(giant extinct rabbit), comitas rex (sea snail), and cattleya rex(flower). however, the specific combination of genus name and specific epithet are not permitted to be hared by. Rule of priority: once a species has officially been given a binomial name, name cannot be changed(unless organism turns out to not be new species)
