Linked to 5. 4 million deaths/year (9% of all deaths) While industrialized nations are smoking less, developing nations are increasing. By 2020, 85% of smokers will be in developing countries. Most north american products are from nicotiana tabacum species. Mostly for flavour, modifying burn rate, ability to release nicotine. Additives are said to be safe, but when burned, can form carcinogenic chemicals. Simple sugars can be converted into acetaldehyde when burned (see ethanol) Naturally occurring chemicals like nicotine, carotenoids (gives color/flavor?) Compounds produced during the curing (drying for burning) process. Up to 599 compounds (data from tobacco companies, 1994) added during processing. 4000 new chemicals are created by burning tobacco. Nicotine thought to be the addictive substance even though it is a neurotoxin. These are combustion products and many are linked to cancer.
