PHIL101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Epicureanism, Epicurus, Ataraxia
Document Summary
Today epicures means someone who may like food, or has a cooking show. Set of rules or maxims of every assumption. The rules that we are supposed to follow to obtain pleasure. We tend to be mistaken by the pleasures we want. The satisfactions you get while getting pleasure. Desire frustration leads to pain, desire satisfaction leads to pleasure. When pain is removed, we get a kick of pleasure. Problem with moving pleasures as the goal of life (to consistently want moving pleasure means to also bring about pain) True pleasure is the absence of pain, freedom from disturbance (ataraxia). Pleasure as the absence of pain does not increase over time (it is like health as the absence of sickness) Intense pleasure is the removal of intense pain. Feeling no pain = pleasure (state of satisfaction) = the happy life of the gods.
