PHIL250 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Categorical Imperative, Hypothetical Imperative
Document Summary
Purpose of chapter: move from popular morality to metaphysics of morals. Last class was why he needs to do this: in order for the principle to be clear to us, have the right way of determining our will, we need to lay it there. We are trying to comprehend this practical rational faculty. Reason comes from forms of intuition and categories of understanding, these are the universal conditions of the possibilities of theoretical experience. Things in themselves are thinkable but completely unknowable. Nature is the totality of appearances in conformity with laws. But humans can formulate things in terms of laws, we have conception of laws. Will is the capacity to act in accordance with our conception of laws. Forms of intuition and categories of understanding (which give us principles of causality) are objective. If we were not subjective to inclinations, we would be infinite rational beings.
