Lec 1: structure and function of the lung. Blood flow: breathing in air is useless if we do not have matching food ow and vice versa. You can have tons of blood ow, but if no air there, it is useless. Generation 23: alveoli (majority f gas exchange occurs into and out of the blood/lungs) From gen17 to 23, this is where all gas exchange occurs. From gen0 to gen16: no alveoli: no gas exchange : anatomical dead space . In gen11, it all is surrounded by cartilage till here. What will happen after gen12, if you increased the pressure outside this? (in thoracic cavity) Those generations will collapse and trap air here. This is normal and there is evolutionary bene t here. Capillary endothelium, fused basement membrane and there alveolar epithelium. It is a phospholipid protein that reduces surface tension in the alveoli. Collapsing is undesirable: no more air no more gas exchange.
