PHYSL210A Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Organ Transplantation, Monocyte, Neutrophil
Document Summary
Knowledge of immunity is still evolving, lots of details and exceptions to every rule. Defending self from non-self: pathogenic bacteria, viral infections, organ transplant, autoimmune diseases, body cells change antigens starting of cancer and tumor growth. Something has gone to your stomach through your mouth, highly acidic environment protects from non- self. Wbc (mainly granulocytes- mostly neutrophils and monocytes/ macrophages) are innate role players. Acquired/adaptive immunity: specific, stepped on a splinter and picked up tetanus bacteria, bacteria is inside blood stream, body detects the non-self agent and tries to mount a specific defense, takes time, role players are lymphocytes (b and t). Remembers the bacteria that entered the body and keep the memory for a long-time. B cells produce antibodies and t cells produce cytotoxic molecules. For the development of adaptive immunity, help from innate defense is required. Positive effects: defends from bacterial and viral infections, get rid of damaged cells of self.
