Characteristic of humans in all cultures and in all stages of development. Typically we use language to communicate, but can occur without verbal exchange. Interactions via gestures, facial expressions, and body language. Language development has a biological basis and is specifically programmed in human beings. One form of communication: can be spoken, written, or signed also used for thought, communication is essential humans are the most social animals. Complex and dynamic system of conventional symbols. Infinite generativity- ability to produce endless number of meaningful sentences using a finite set of words and rules. Phonology- sound system of language; how the sounds are used, combined: phoneme- smallest unit of sound. Morphology- morphemes: units of meaning in word formation. Syntax- ways words are combined to form acceptable phrases and sentences. Pragmatics- appropriate use of language in context; can be very complex. Behaviourist explanations: we learn through, reinforcement, shaping, extinction, other basic principles of operant conditioning.
