PSYCO239 Lecture Notes - Apocalypticism
Document Summary
Pluralism is not only the tolerance of difference, but active engagement in learning about one another"s beliefs. Pluralism is not just interested in finding similarities, but also means better education as to other"s beliefs and your own, differences included. Pluralism is equal support and acceptance and permission in decision making to all religions. Pluralism focuses on the value of harmony, present in all religions. True instances of genuine dialogue where the dialogees are open minded and willing to change their opinion are rare. Dialogue cannot be controlled by orthodoxy (orthodoxy implies herasy). both sides must be considered equal. Mughal indian emperor akbar had real dialogue. There have been attempts at dialogue today but rarely works out the way it should. The goal of dialogue, in modern sense, is to understand religious traditions. understanding does not mean participation. you don"t have to participate and identify with a religion to understand it, at least no academically.
