Document Summary

Topic 8: memory: memory, process that allows us to record and later retrieve experiences and information. Retain and use info about stimuli, images, skills, events and ideas after original info is no longer present. Viewed as a system that encodes, stores and retrieves: eg. Retrieval memory: sensory memory (sm, holds incoming sensory info long enough for it to be recognized. Can be activated with residues of senses, but not reliable. Composed of different subsystems called sensory registers, which are initial info processes: experiment: sperling in 1960. Whole report (no tone) most sm. Immediate tone less sm: delay then tone least sm. Showed sm is large and can hold a lot of info but is very short: two types of sensory memory. Visual sensory register: lasts fractions of a second, eg. Auditory sensory register: lasts around 2s, short term memory, holds info we are conscious of at any given time.
