When and Where to Seek Therapy?
1. When → Severe emotional discomfort, unable to handle problem or life transition, or past
problem worsening or has resurfaced.
2. Where → School counselling center, community agency, hospital emergency room, professional
in private practice.
Types of Supporters
1. Counselling Psychologist → stronger focus on healthier individuals.
a. Career, marriage/relationships, school, abuse, etc.
b. Individual, pair or group counselling.
2. Clinical Psychologist → Stronger focus on psychosis or other serious mental illness.
a. Stronger issues
b. Psychosis Impaired reality.
c. Correcting cognitive perceptions and self issues → typically more extensive than
counselling.
3. Psychiatrist → medical doctor that supports people with mental illness
a. More emphasis on physical solutions but may provide therapy.
b. Doctor training to become psychiatrist (med school)
c. Individuals may resist therapy
Choosing a Therapist
1. Therapist-Client relationship → Degree of similarity between therapist and client, feeling of ease
with therapist methods and explicit/agreed on goals for treatment.
2. Look for culturally competent therapist → utilizes knowledge about client’s culture to achieve
broad understanding of client.
a. Understand the cultural background
b. Understand both individual and cultural differences
3. Gender issues → Focus on changing women’s life circumstances
a. Aware of oppressive environmental conditions, focus on supporting people in choices
that meet their needs
i. Be careful → focusing on negative thoughts towards the system amplifies
negativity.
Types of therapies
1. Psychodynamic → Client and Therapist form therapeutic relationships and techniques to achieve
a therapeutic outcome.
a. Based on Freudian principles
i. Goal is to help patients achieve insight
ii. Insight is the conscious awareness of underlying problems → adjust behaviours
underlying problems learned in childhood.
b. Utilizes Free Association → uncensored conversation, verbal reports of thought feelings
or images that enter awareness without censorship.
