Document Summary

Claims and validity: interrogation tools for consumers of research. The 3 types of claims are frequency, association, and causal. The 4 types of validities are construct, external, statistical, and internal. A variable is an attribute that varies, and has at least two levels or values. Value: one of the possible variations, or levels, of a variable. Constant: something that could potentially vary but that has only one level in the study in question. A measured variable is a variable in a study whose levels are observed and recorded. A manipulated variable is a variable in an experiment that researchers control by assigning participants to its different levels. Some variables cannot be manipulated- they can only be measured. Other variables cannot be manipulated in an experiment because it would be unethical to do so. Some variables can be either manipulated or measured, depending on the goals of the study. Conceptual definition: a researcher"s definition of a variable at an abstract level.
