Classi cation issues: normal and abnormal are questioned. Mental health eld has not adopted classical categorical model: second strategy is dimensional approach, moods and behaviours put on a scale of 1- Reliability: 2 clinicians should be able to diagnose patient and see, measure, the same set of behaviours and emotions, bias can happen. Study was done and found that less experiences or female diagnosed borderline personality disorder more frequently than criteria indicated. Patients who were white, female, or poor we diagnosed with borderline personality disorder more frequently than the criteria indicated. Diagnoses before 1980: recently trying to create formal nosology, kraepelin"s theorizing that psychological disorders are basically biological disturbances has greatest impact on nosology. Dsm-iv and dsm-iv-tr: dsm-iv relies little on consensus of experts but on sound scienti c data, biggest change was distinction between organically based disorders and psychologically based disorders that was present in previous editions was eliminated.
