PSYCO241 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Mindset
Document Summary
Fixed mindset: beliefs that human characteristics and social relationships are fixed and stable. Growth mindset: human characteristics are fluid and changeable. Fixed: people are born smart, people can"t really change their personality, the success of a potential relationship is destined from the very beginning. Incremental growth: people"s intelligence is determined by effort, people can substantially change the kind of person they are, successful relationships evolve over time and through hard work. Everyone wants to satisfy their needs and be successful in their own way. The first step is to set a goal. Failure is inevitable and our goals will guide our responses to failure. Some people tend to self-handicap themselves because they are afraid of failure and therefore they don"t try to succeed. The last step is achievement and coping with threats. Mastery goal: focus on developing and mastering new skills (the learning process). Performance goal: focus on getting favourable judgements and on their performance.
