PSYCO241 Lecture 14: Social Behaviour
Document Summary
Conformity: the tendency to change our perceptions, options, or behaviour in ways that are consistent with group norms. Sherif"s auto-kinetic effect: it"s based on a visual illusion. You look at a small white dot, and most people think that the dot is moving, but it"s just your eyes moving. If alone, people are consistent with answering how much the light moves. The participants were then put together to discuss how far the light moved, and the participants moved their individual estimate towards to total group"s estimate. People conformed to the answers of the other people in the group. Informational social influence: conforming because we believe that other"s interpretation of an ambiguous situation is more correct than ours and will help us choose an appropriate course of action. Ex: titanic scene where leonardo watches the people around him to see what to do.
