Prejudice: negative feelings about others because of their connection to a social group. Discrimination: negative behaviors directed against persons because of their membership in a particular group. Affect how and when we will categorize people. The classification of persons into groups on the basis of common attributes. Your needs in a situation can dictate how you categorize someone. Ex. if your house was on fire, you would categorize a black firefighter just as a firefighter and not as black. Do this because of social identity benefits and self-esteem benefits (believe group is better- feel better) Stronger you identify with a group, the stronger this is. Outgroups: groups that you do not identify with. Assume there is a greater similarity among members of outgroups.
