PSYCO241 Lecture Notes - Lecture 73: David Buss, Evolutionary Psychology, Physical Attractiveness
Document Summary
Skateboarders show increased risky behavior in presence of an attractive woman. Increased risk-taking due to hightend testosterone level induced by attractive woman. Large survey of about 10,000 men and women in 37 different cultures revealed that (see. Buss, 1989): men and women both valued kindness as one of the most important traits along with others such as dependability and sense of humour. Again, although clear gender differences in mate preference, they may not be only because of evolutionary explanations. Finally, men may value physical attractiveness in partner slightly more than women because of societal influence (e. g. hatfield & rapson, 1993). This area of research and the textbook contain a large quantity of evolutionary theorizing. Important to know that there are different explanations. Universality in mate selection may not be so universal. Social context matters: gender differences can be muted by certain social contexts.
